Short answer: yes. In the UK, anyone coaching under-18s 1-to-1 in a sports setting needs an enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check. Any coach who is vague about it should not be working with your child.
What "enhanced" means
Enhanced DBS is the standard for regulated activity with children. It's more thorough than a basic or standard DBS. Coaches should be able to produce a copy on request — many carry it or have it uploaded to the DBS Update Service.
Safeguarding certificates
Separate from DBS. Standard safeguarding for coaches is UK Coaching's “Safeguarding & Protecting Children” workshop (renewed every three years) or an equivalent from the relevant national governing body.
